A twisted analogy...
You know the opening scene out of saving private ryan? Beach landing?
Imagine that the job of your MAF or MAP was to count how many non dead soldiers you've got.
A MAF sensor counts how many soldiers leave the boat, a MAP sensor counts how many made it all the way up the beach.
Running an NA setup is like charging your soliders up a beach with no machineguns... May as well count them while they're still on the boat!
Adding a bypass valve after the MAF is like adding a machinegun on the beach...
Not all of your soldiers that run off the boat make it to the top of the beach, so makes more sense to count how many are 'left' rather than how many start out on the boat.
