Neither the first generation MR2 nor the corollas were ever offered with a turbo. You probably just got a 4A-GE. Now, the ticking sound could be just the TVIS plate or a cracked exhaust manifold (around the #4 runner) which is very common on the early MR2, if it's not engine knock the engine should be fine.
