Thanks Ben, you were right it was a heavy layer of carbon on the inside of the throttle body. Apparently, when the engine was running at idle the vacuum was enough to pull the butterfly valve against some hard stuff. I cleaned it all up and the problem went away. There are so many sensors and gadgets on this machine that I was worried that there was some kind of widget actively working in there.
