I have the same issue. It's not a fluid issue, and I don't believe MKIs have that wired to the brake light. I thought it was the same thing, but my reservoir is full to the top.
It started slowly for me, sometimes it'd stay on, and then turn off later. It's actually the e-brake switch (it's located directly in front of the e-brake when it's down). If you slightly pull the e-brake up, and feel in front of the level you'll feel the little button that it pushes. Constantly pushing this in on mine by hand was able to remove the problem a few times, but the switch eventually went out permanently. The fix is simply pull the console off, iirc the e-brake doesn't need to be removed, unplug the switch, plug the new one back in.
