You really don't need an EMS for the engine until you pass a certain point. A lot of people make ~300 hp without EMS on these motors. Toyota has a tendency (or used to) to over engineer things. An easy way to get more power. New turbo (CT-20b or CT-27) and boost controller will go a long way. Throw on the exhaust and you'll spool faster and the intercooler will allow for more boost. But the stock unit is usually good till around 15 psi from what I've heard. Matt (SW20Tmatt) runs ~15 psi on this stock engine with no issues. Alaine has a CT20b on his turbo and says it completely changes the driving experience. It really depends on what you're looking for as far as power gains and power delivery (peak HP and power curve for torque or HP)...
