It could be the socket ya, you could go rip a new socket off of a car at the junkyard and put it in (i'm not sure how easy it would be, haven't seen mk2 bulb sockets

But it could be a fuse... is there anything else not working? Go check each fuse, and use a test meter or whatever it's called and check that each fuse you pull actually lets current through, because sometimes they don't look blown but they are, also use a test light to see if the socket actually is getting power, (when it's in reverse of course) and if you can check somewhere along those wires.
I had an
OLD merc where the wires and sockets and stuff for the turn signals were all loose and i kinda went in and re-soldered some stuff and it was all good.
