That should work. It is what I used on mine and what the MSD instructions say to do. Which MSD unit are you using? Worse case if you can't figure it out give MSD a call.
Double check all your connections and make sure you are connecting the right wires to the positive and negative on the coil. You can check it with a multimeter to see which is which with the key turned to the on position but the engine not running.
If it helps the ignitor is sending the trigger signal to the coil to fire. The MSD is just intercepting that signal, delaying it and then sending a retarded signal to fire the coil. The Tach Adapter is probably just a filter so the MSD can read it correctly.
