Actually both can

Too retarded and you can get the exhaust literally glowing from the high exhaust gas temps. Too advanced and you get pinging and incorrect burn and a whole bunch of other problems. I would rather have too retarded than advanced but neither is actually very good. Having it retarded normally doesn't do much harm but that is not to say it won't. I'm starting to confuse myself now, point is correct timing = no timing related problems.
