A bit of oil dripping into the cylinder won't hurt anything unless it carries chunky debris with it (rocks, metal shavings, stuff that can scratch your cylinder walls). It'll just smoke a little when you first start up. Coolant loss, sweet smelling exhaust, white smoke and running poorly add up to head gasket problems. Very likely you ran out of oil, which caused you to overheat, which warped your head a little and caused the head gasket to fail. I'd go ahead and pull the spark plugs, do a compression test, and be prepared not to like what you find. If two adjacent cylinders have low compression, that confirms bad head gasket.
