4agze block is the same as the n/a block.... crank is the same as well.... this is *year for year*. The n/a block to the pre 87's was weaker and the crank was smaller -- not sure I would use the term "weaker" for the early crank.
only difference is that the gze block in the US had oil squirters whereas the 87-89's only had the ability to install them (just not installed). All 90+ 16V's have squirters in them, however.
As for whether or not the rods will work depends on what crank you plan to use. If you already have aftermarket rods and pistons, I would assume you've done your homework for ensuring you have the rods that match the crank you will use (stock or not). All 4a rods are the same length, so that shouldn't be an issue.
