Frequently the timing marker, or pointer has been broken off, or replaced with an ordinary bolt.

So, if this is true in your case, you have plenty of company.

I've always fine tuned my timing by ear and test driving. Too retarded the car loses power in the higher RPMS. Too advanced and it turns over slowly, pings, or runs good only in the higher RPM range.
