Let me start by telling you from experience what I have encounter in my swap of this same engine. A couple of questions?
1- does the engine have the complete wiring and ecu.
2- what else you do not have.
3- What is it do you really want to run, (oem, turbo or itbs)

these are important thing that people in the forum need to know before any advice is given.
To run the itbs you can use the oem ecu but will have to make sure you can use the original tps, and also have to be able to run the maf sensor. If the power fc is compatible with a map sensor then you can run itbs because of the vvti problem with other aftermarket ecu. No matter what people say running the vvti with other ecu is a big problem, What is the use of having the beams vvti engine if you are not going to use vvti. Even though im going turbo now with this engine, If I have to start over again I will rethink my strategy and stay set to one idea.
If going turbo i will use a 3sgte engine. Beacuse by using the beams engine there is always the posibilty of breaking the engine if there is a timing misadjustment by the ecu.
My advise to you is to run the engine with the oem throttle body and ecu. Like the carina guy did. Get all the bugs out of the swap fix. make sure the vvti and the rest is working properly. And only after that think about itbs or turbo. This is only my humble opinion. I been there done that and still going at it.
