The O2 sensor is necessary for the car to run correctly like Toyota intended it too. It also a great idea to have one when you modify your car to be sure it running correctly still. I wish it was necessary as I just spent $185.95 for mine. I want my car to run properly and I want to be able to tune it properly.
If the car is all stock or mostly stock then yeah you can run it without the O2 sensor or the knock sensor. However you lose power without it and it hurts the gas mileage horribly. My dad had 2002 Toyota Truck and his went bad but ran fine. His gas mileage went from 24mpg to 19mpg. It also developed a knock at low RPM's so if it were me I would replace it (O2 sensor that is).
As for the knock sensor, I really can not comment on it. I will tell you for my application that I would replace mine in a heart beat as I am going turbo with boost at +10 even for a daily use.
