One issue that was not discussed in te51levin's response or M-r2d2's initial post is the cause of the blown head gasket. If the engine overheated and the head had to be milled, then the chamber volume would effectively be decreased, (and the compression increased), if a head gasket of the same thickness replaces the one that was removed.
