VVT, as used in 20V 4AGE motors,
activates a solenoid which uses oil pressure to switch the cam position from one angle to the other, within a fairly narrow range.
VVTI
uses (IIRC) pulse width modulation to vary the amount of time the solenoid is open/shut, to use oil pressure to put the cam in a specified place within something like a 50 degree range of movement.
The problem is that since the range of movement with the VVTI pulley is so much more, just turning it 'on' or 'off' isnt necessarily going to put the cam in a place which is good for making power anywhere, as it will be at either extreme of this range.
I wouldnt reccomend setting up VVTI in this way.
