The amount of torque in first gear is significantly greater than in any of the other gears.
If you watched SpeedTV over the weekend, on one of the shows prior to the Monaco F1 race, there was an interesting segment showing the seven speed transmission used by one of the teams. The first gear was almost twice as thick as the seventh gear in order to handle the torque of the engine.
