One thing you need to consider before you start building is what class you want to run in autocross. Most engine mods will put you in a class in which an NA MR2 is no longer competative.
3s rods require that the crank be ground to fit them. It's not a difficult thing for a machine shop to do and is actually pretty cheap if the motor is apart. It is only neccesary though if you want to raise your redline.
If you stay NA then the stock type pistons are fine and work with 3s rods. If you want a compression change then you will need custom ones or shave the head.
