How about issue #1 being a total lack of power?! I once dynoed an '85 NA->SC with the SC clutch ground lead disconnected, and I'll have to dig up the dyno sheets, yet I seem to remember it barely making 80hp (if that!). And it barely made redline. It was a dog.

If you really want to hypermile, stay away from the engine. Just get the revs down. Start with NA, then swap in a Paseo C-series with top-speed ratios, lighten the car, lower the car, increase tire diameter... then get the speedo recalibrated!
