Actually it's a very good idea.

Kameleon has one running in his 91 mr2. Compared to his previous gen2's, it's a less laggy motor, and makes more power right off the bat than a gen3.

You do have to round up some additional parts and you'll have to get a turbo transmission, however, you can pick up motor swap sets for $1100-$1500 right now. The cost of doing one of these is actually similar to swapping a gen2 or gen3 3sgte. You just don't get the convenience of a clip.

I do the custom wiring for these. I make a totally pnp harness which installs like factory. Wiring for these is very similar to the wiring I do for the beams 3sge. I generally charge $350.

There's only one gen4 that I know of in an mr2 running on stock gen4 electronics, but it could very well be the best bang for the buck swap you can do in a mk2 mr2. We'll see.
