I live in MI, and the car had about 125K miles on it and some rusting so it wasn't babied, and I had no problem getting the ball joints off. I had done all 4, I never removed the control arm from the car. Usually I just loosened the radius arm where it attaches to the control, unbolted the ball joint and popped it off with one of the tools in the suspension tool kit you can borrow from an auto parts store.
