Don, the exhaust is directly under the rear trunk. Not only would you have the problem of hot air rising into the trunk, but you'd have radiant heat (infrared) blazing off the exhaust onto the radiator.
I managed to remove about 250 lbs from my car. And one of the stupider things I did was remove the heat shield that sits on top of the Cat. and muffler. Without it, the trunk got so hot, that anything left in the trunk got "browned". So I got some real thin aluminum sheet metal pieces, and sandwiched a layer of fiberglass between them. And screwed them down. Its was still a weight savings in the end though.
