NASA Nationals 2009 - my story

competition actually started yesterday, here's the little write-up I had from the race:

started 3rd, PTE & PTF in their own start group so probably about 11th overall in our start group. Right after the flag a PTE Miata on the inside row misses a shift, the PTF pole sitter runs right into the back of him (think very hard bump draft) and just stays there, which also traps 2nd in PTF on the outside. I of course duck underneath both of them and lead PTF into turn 1. Stayed there for quite a while pulling every legal-but-dirty-trick on this PTF Neon (booger green, same generation as Dave's Neon) until he starts burning his front tires off about 15 mins into the 20 min race.

No time to rest though, as the pole sitter 1st gen RX7 had by then recovered, passed the Neon, and is gaining on me with what I figured out later was 2 laps to go. I pushed just a little bit too hard going into the "Attitudes" section - if I had a scanner I could show you, can't find a good map online - but its as you approach the one real hill at the track - I push wide at the top of this downhill slalomn like section, slide out onto the gravel, bounce up over the curb - the whole time not really lifting with the car sliding all over the place - and come back on in second hot on the tail of the pole-sitter. He's got a bit more pace than I do, but as we get close to the end of the lap and get the white flag a PTE Miata comes by me and I smell my opportunity. I'm going to try and follow this car that is lapping our group through to the lead of my class.. sneaky sneaky eh? It aaallllmooost worked too, maybe next time. Great race, great result - can't ask for much more
