Well, it probably never will. Everything on a Camry is made extra-soft to absorb all the little mechanical unpleasantness it can. So it'll always be softer, quieter, smoother than an MR2, even if they have the exact same engine in the exact same state of tune.

You will probably want to replace them if the boots are torn, but you do not have to remove the ball joints to inspect for wear. Have your mechanic put the car on a lift, then put a pry bar between the knuckle and the control arm. Check for looseness in the ball joint by trying to move the control arm relative to the knuckle. It should not have any slop.
