rings and valve stems should smoke the same colour only differance is the valve stem seals will smoke more at start up or just after being on the over run
very white smoke can be caused by brake fluid if the master cylinder leaks into the vacuum box it will go up the vac lines into the intake
pop the vacuum line off and see if any fluid drips out at all after a few mins
