First I should clarify something. The part I listed as "gage", 83420-16020, is not the instrument in your dashboard. It is the sending unit that runs the gage. Toyota calls it a gage, so that's what I wrote - although Toyota also calls an engine oil dipstick a "gage", so...gotta be careful. Describing the part clearly is far more useful than relying on the name Toyota (or anyone else) assigns it.

The problem is more likely to be the sending unit than the gauge in the dash, but unless you take the time to diagnose the problem, we're really guessing. Still, I do sell the sending unit with some regularity, which indicates that it is a fairly common problem.
