interference doesn't mean the piston would hit the head.... that means that it would hit the valve if the valve were to be stuck open for some reason.....

if the block and head were cut so much that the pistons are damaged from hitting the head, then the head and all valves are destroyed as well... and if it actually ran, I would guess the rods are bent as well.
