yes, it needs to be flexible... I ran into this same problem when I received my axles sent by another Mr2 owner who didn't use the C shaped brackets to hold the cage in place...

Can't remember where I found it (or if it still is out there, as this was about 6 years ago) but the bearings don't go in exactly how you would think... they're offset from the housing (hard to describe).
