I know alot of guys in the UK put the Mk3 Spyder wheels on their Mk1s. I have several different sets of 15" wheels and they fit my Mk1 and the Mk3 Spyder.

The PCD is 4 x 100 and the standard offset is 35 > 38 but you can go to a 45 offset. The other important thing to consider is the centre bore of the wheel hub a Mk1 is 54.1 (this is where your locating or spigot rings come into play). This allows wheels with a larger centre to fit snuggly onto the centre bore on the hub.
