How do I know if my water pump is broken???

Hi,

I've been trying to diagnose an overheating problem on my MR2 but can't seem to work out what is causing it.

I drained the coolant system and sure enough there was air in the radiator I've sorted but I'm not sure if the root of the problem is the water pump giving up.

Having topped the system up (air free), I started the engine and let it run for a few minutes, but upon being nosey and having a look in the filler cap in the engine bay, I could see no circulation of the water.

Surely I'd be able to see it flowing through the filler neck as the water pump pushes it through?

Are there any (easy) ways of testing the water pump?

Thanks!

James
