keep in mind that your dash gauge may be lying....

if there is air trapped in the system.....

the coolant temp sensor (for on the dash) is located on the inlet housing of the return hose from the radiator -- however, this area (where the filler is) is the highest point of the coolant system. Since air is lighter than coolant and water, it's quite possible that some of the air is getting trapped at the highest point, then the hot air is getting pulled down across the coolant sensor....

that all being said... anytime you replace a thermostat your car will lose coolant and you need to make sure the cooling system is air free.... any car.
