Well, letting off the gas in 1st gear isn't going to be smooth at all because of the amount of engine braking you're getting. 1st gear is the strongest (as in shortest) gear in the box, so naturally, the engine will slow the car down rather suddenly as the vacuum (and friction) within the engine (aka 'engine braking') is quite powerful, and since you're in the shortest possible gear, it has the worst effect possible on the car.

You should use 1st gear just to get moving, after that, if you need to make throttle adjustments, use 2nd gear.

I don't recommend replacing the front and rear motor mounts with the OEM specification, as those will just tear (been there, done that). Get some polyurethane inserts. They'll transmit a little more vibration through the chassis, but the engine won't move nearly as much.
