I seem to recall the car being smart and cutting the lights when you opened the door if the car was off, but now it doesn't seem to.

Seeing as how the buzzer had like 8+ wires going into it, I'm thinking that may be related.
It is. I opted to leave the buzzer as is and so my lights do turn off when the doors open if I leave the lights on with ignition off .... Also I do not accidentally lock/leave my keys in the car. One less thing to remember. Do I like the noise? No but it is a bit nostalgic in a pleasantly irritating kind of way.... more irritating is leaving lights on or locking my keys in the car.
