For bang-for-your buck, I'd definately look into the 1ZZ. These are a dime a dozen, they come out of every rental Corolla that gets crashed. You can easily find one for $400-$500. With ~130hp/~125ft.-lb., it's a little less powerful than the 5S-FE, but it's also aluminum, and has VVT-i to play with. Also, lots of people have very successfully built high boost motors on stock internals, so you know its going to last. Installation shouldn't be a whole lot harder than the 5S, and it has a 6 speed that can easily be installed if you're looking for more fun
