Well the volume of air inside the plenum doesnt change.

It does seem strange that they're so close to the back wall however.

Probably for space issues more than anything, the pipes would be tuned at that length to give a gain at a certain RPM range.

Notice how a redtop intake manifold has intake runners that are about 2/3s of the length of a gen 2 or gen 3 engine's manifold.
