rom tune questions and more

I am about to order a rom tune as soon as my used ATS td06 kit gets here and I am curious about a couple of things. I know that you guys can do a mail order tune for some custom mods, but I am unclear on which ones, and at what point I will have to make the trip to Texas to get it tuned. So here is the progression that I have planned (keep in mind I have all basic bolt ons) after the kit is installed 1) add on some 264 cams and ATS cam gears 2)add an RMR intake and 3) rebuild the bottom end to a 2.2L
So based on that, what number can I make it to just through mail order?

Also, the kit that I bought is made by you guys for the all trac, or in other words, the wastegate is on the bottom and the stock heatshield goes on. Just to make sure, does this work fine on the MR2? This kit does not have a wastegate reroute which I feel I need added. If my local welder doesn't feel confident doing it can I send the used kit in to have it modified? Finally, why does the all trac reroute cost so much more than the MR2 reroute, and do you have any pics of the all trac reroute done?

Probably 350RWHP. You'll need to install the cams straight up, instead of degreed, since we can't reprogram the timing advance at idle to account for the increased reversion from degreed cams. It may take a couple of tunes to get you optimal...the process is, we send you a tune, you dyno it with a wideband, we make a new tune based on the results...repeat as necessary.

Yes, it works fine. Some MR2 customers in CA prefer it, since it makes it easier to pass a visual inspection.

Yes, you can send the kit in for modification if needed. It costs more because there is a lot more labor involved.

I'm not aware of any pictures. We haven't done more than a couple of All Trac kits, and I don't think any of them were rerouted, but I will ask Aaron about it when the shop reopens on Tuesday.

Best regards,

Ken

Ken- so let me get this straight, adj cam gears can NOT properly be used on a ROM tune car period, I would need a standalone. If so then I can save my money and buy an RMR intake. So given that I would then have 264s and the rmr in addition to all the fueling, bolt ons, and of course the tdo6- Does ATS have a tune on file for that? And assuming so, then I would order it, install it, dyno it, have the plot examined by ATS to look for improvement. The I have to pay a certain amount ($150?) to get a more focused tune, which I should then dyno, and send the graph to ATS to see how it goes and then pay another sum to get another tune etc, etc?
I'm sorry if I sound like a broke record, I am planning my purchases and possibly changing vacation plans if necessary (if I need to go to Houston)based on this

Hi. You cannot degree the cams with the ROM tune, because we don't have access to the idle settings. Degreed cams allow a greater degree of exhaust gas reversion, contaminating the fresh charge air from the intake valves, which is what causes the infamous loping idle. The solution is to add timing advance at idle, but that can only be done with a standalone.

FWIW, my stroker had 264 cams, degreed to Chrisk's recommendations. I had a stock intake manifold that had been extrude honed. My tuner played with cam settings on the dyno, and the curve didn't change a bit, even with the cams returned to "straight up". Our conclusion was that there was a bottleneck elsewhere, most likely the stock intake manifold, but possibly the stock size valves I was running. (or both)

I'll have to check with Aaron on whether we have a tune on file for RMR+cams. We are in Dallas, not Houston. Every ROM tune does include a custom, on-dyno tune, so if you brought the car to us, there would be no additional cost to you.

You have the process correct, except that if the initial tune is "off", a retune is free. The $150 for a reflash is in the event that you make a significant change in VE, like changing turbos, or going from a stock intake manifold to an RMR, requiring a retune.
