Another ROM Tune Question
Okay, I have read your website & searched here & the other MR2 forum for this question/answer. Either I could not find it or I am getting old & stupid & just did not see it. But, it is an easy question, I hope.
Can your ROM tune eliminate the AFM? Plain & simple I guess. Just curious as your ROM tune is sounding more & more of what I am looking for when I finally get ready to rebuild my 3sgte. I am not into BIG power, just looking at forged pistons with OEM like CR & a REAL GOOD Port/polish & port matching, quick spooling turbo, dependable parts (i.e HG & ARP fasteners), maybe some cams (like gen3's or similar) & a REAL GOOD tune. Probably not worth it to me to eliminate the AFM with power goal of around 300 rwhp at around 15-16psi boost with 93 octane pump gas (your race gas tune/switch is interesting too!) & hope to hit 200 rwtq at or before 3500 rpms in a 4th gear pull. Goal is MR2 weighing in around 3000 lbs with me & a full tank of gas (almost there with this, pretty easy) & 300 rwhp & tq. So, I can meet my goal of 1 rwhp per 10 lbs of weight. So, you have the parts I need, just curious about the ROM tune. I know what I can get with an EMS. But the ROM tune would be SO MUCH simpler & in my book more dependable. We will be talking when I am ready to rebuild on turbo choices etc... Thanks, Daniel ![]() |

No, it can't, and really, you don't want it to. The AFM is part of the reason ROM tunes can work so well on different cars. The AFM compensates automatically for small changes in volumetric efficiency.

Ahhhh thank you. Just finishing up some research. I usually do lots of research before I purchase & start projects.
Thanks again. That is kind-of what I figured, this just confirms it. Daniel ![]() Last edited by mr2boost; 10-11-2008 at 12:38 AM. |

Okay, I know you say you can build any motor to specs, so...
I have a 1990 Toyota 4x4 with a 22re. I have been thinking of a 22rte build. Nothing real fancy or high HP build. I know it would be easy for you to make my 22re into a 22rte with say a gt2860rs turbo & FMIC. What I am wondering is can the 22re ECU be ROM tuned for the 22rte build? Reason I ask is I am very much considering your ROM tune due to this main fact. Where I live, here in Memphis, TN there is NO ONE that can tune an EMS (which is not too far from Texas to get a motor built the way I want). There are only 3 dynos in town & I don't trust one shop as far as I can throw the fire truck in my station. Having to come to your shop each time there was a problem with an EMS would be a pain too. So, your ROM tune option is very appealing, especially seeing that I am not looking for a real high HP set up on either my truck or my MR2. Thanks guys, but you are really helping with my research. Sorry, the 22re ECU is not supported by our hardware.
Once your vehicle is tuned, there should be no reason to re-tune unless you make changes to the volumetric efficiency, and then it's just a matter of trimming the A/F a little. If your EMS won't hold a tune it's time for a different EMS. |

Okay, good information there.
I will pick your brain for recommendations when I am ready with the cash. Not anytime real soon, so I don't want to be wasting your time. But y'all are about the closest folks to me that I would trust with a rebuild. Thanks again! Daniel ![]() |
