Sound wierd but Coke, or Pepsi has been used to clean tailpipes. I saw it on Myth Buster's.

If they are chrome, an SOS pad works well. Chrome is so hard the SOS pad won't scratch it at all...well maybe if you pushed REALLY hard.

Gasoline is a good cleaner, especially for tar and stuff.

I've heard of the Coke thing, never tried it.

The scotchbrite pad probably wouldn't hurt stainless.

It wouldn't, it's good for polishing. WD40 is also a great cleaner.

is it safe to use a spray can clear coat on an exhaust? I doubt the kind available to me at lordco is high temp. But the shine after a good polish doesn't seem to stick around very long.

You can but it likely won't stick very well if yours are polished well. The smooth surface doesn't let it adhere well, and the heat would get to it pretty fast. Worse case you have to buff it off which won't cost you too much more than A LOT of elbow grease...

I've seen it on TV a lot, and some of my friends have tried it and it worked. However I have not personally stood there and watched or tried it. I mean it's steel so it's hard to hurt anything.

I just polished out my OEM tailpipes and exhuast, looks nice. Sorry, no pics of it. Anyways, use a mothers powerball mini (smaller than the regular powerball so will fit into more places) and some mothers polish. I prefer the stuff in the canister w/ the powerball over the stuff in the bottle. This works great on aluminum wheels too. You can really polish out a dull wheel quick. They also have a powerball MD that is more aggressive if you need to polish out scratches.
