Is this oxidation or dying clearcoat?
I am hoping this is just really bad oxidation that some clay and buff loving even water sanding could possibly take out without a respray. It is just on my driver side door.

That is clear coat failure, IMO. However there should not be a clear on the OEM paint so I'd say that the panel and perhaps the whole car was resprayed at one time. Sadly there is little you can do to fix CC failure except a respray. Wetsanding damaged clear will buy you nothing but a larger area with no clear. There is no way to save damaged clear.
So once you get past that you should know that the MR2 will look great when you get it repainted. The body style is seemingly ageless, has tons of aftermarket kits available, and was built very well. |

You definitely also have bad oxidation but that's flaked off clear coat.

I figured as much, and it is interesting to know these cars came with an integrated clear coat. My next question would be when I have this resprayed should I go with a stock type paint or is it that much better to go with a base and clear?

Well the OEM paint was single stage. SS paint is very good looking and easy to maintain. Modern SS paints are just a durable as BC/CC IMHO. If it were me, I'd go for a SS respray using a high quality paint.
