Autocross Help.
I want to go into Autocross. There are a few tracks that are simi near me.
PIR AMC SPR VIR how do I go about entering in for Autocross? few more questions: Do I have to have a roll cage? I know I need a flame suit and a helmet, but do I need gloves? Can I race with T-tops? Do I need to be over 21 or anything? Is there anything I should know? |

autocrosses are low speed stuff usually done in parking lots
if you're talking about wanting to drive on the full size tracks, you should look at trackdays. for your basic begginer level DE type event, you just need a helmet (no suit, etc), drivers license, etc. Be advised that DE events are not racing, you're just out there on track learning to drive faster, usually with an instructor in the passenger seat helping you ![]() some tracks are picky about t-tops, but I'm sure those t-top guys can chime in on what might be required there |

I'd just be concerned about my helmet hitting my tops, I'm pretty tall and am pretty close to them as is. |

NASA Mid Atlantic has a fairly strong autocross group and some nice sites (like the Danville Airport). Might want to look at what other SCCA regions there are around you that autocross, they invented the game after all.
you will have to do something monumentally stupid to roll an MR2 at an autocross, speeds <50-60mph tops in most cases, don't worry about it |

I do SCCA autocross, and they don't care at all about t-tops and, as KBrew pointed out, rolling an MR2 at an autocross requires serious anti-talent. NASA & SCCA HPDE-type events (on real tracks) may require that you keep them on, but they have no problem with t-tops in general. My car has them, and I've been to a couple of track days without even having a question raised.
I also have a neighbor who, unfortunately, rolled his t-top MR2...on the street...being a toolbag. If anything good came of it, it's the knowledge that the '2, even with t-tops does pretty well in a roll-over. the windows were busted, and the a-pillars were a little deformed, but the b-pillars and back were not visually deformed at all. He walked away unscathed. I'm sure, of course, that if you chucked it off the track at 100+mph and barrel rolled a half dozen times, there would be more damage. |

I don't know about the PA, but in Detroit area I found a few clubs that autoX like the Corvette Club, the Michigan Sports Car Club, and the Alpha Romeo Club. You can try and look up clubs like that in PA.
Also check this sight out - www.myautoevents.com The clubs I mentioned above post their events on this website, and the postings are national, so they may have PA events. Good luck! Im starting out AutoX'ing for the first time this Sunday, and I am pretty excited. |
