Autocross?

I am looking at getting into autocross in my 91 NA. I dont have a whole lot of money at the moment but what would anyone suggest I do as far as mods go? I was thinking suspension, exhaust, and new tires since mine arent too good anymore.

tires, rims, and brakes.... suspension isn't too bad off stock as long as everything is aligned right and not broken

Personally, I wouldnt do a thing. Get another set of wheels, even if its just a cheap set ($50-100) of stock wheels, and put some better tires on, whether they're stickier summer tires, or some R-compounds.

Run the car as is and then figure out your changes from the feel of the car.

Have you modified anything at all so far? suspension, wheels, etc?

Stock 91 wheels are 14 x 6, and 14 x 7.

I would atleast go to one or two the way it is, and then go from there. Modding your car will bump you into a class that might be harder to compete in. Even if you're going just for fun, you will still be bumped into a class with cars modded much more than yours.

What type of tires do you have on now? What kind of wheels? Are there any local autox's still available for this season?

Just go auto-x at a local car club, search online for local events. Don't worry about classes or modding your car until you have a full season under your belt and you can decide what needs to changed or upgraded suspension wise.

First thing you want to buy is a helmet
(You can't autocross unless you have a helmet =P )

Give it a few shots and then I suggest you fix up your suspension, tires, brakes, and rims as mentioned above, if you don't got money do a little bit at a time (brakes first)

Go to an event or two, then do some research and build it for a class. What you buy for stock class will be totally different than, say, stu2, or sm. If you mod the car before you pick a class to aim for, you will end up in too high a class for what the car is capable of and need to spend a ton to be competitive.

Im really looking at doing this just for fun, if I win then great if not im not going to be too upset. And from what I understand the club in this area has rental helmets. and i have a few friends that race so i could borrow one that way.
as far as brakes, suspension, tires and wheels what do you all suggest?

This is sooo true.
I started in SM2! Let's just say that a novice in SM2 is like a teeball player in the Major leagues.
I just bought an N/A; never to AX, but it has headers and 17" wheels which automatically puts it in a higher class.

It's much more fun if you can be , somewhat, competitive.
The BEST MODS FOR YOUR CAR are seat time and drivers ed. Improve your skills before you improve your car. I am consistently fighting off a stock MK III for times; I have wide sticky tires and a turbo V6, but he is an amazing driver...

Dance, the SCCA is considering an STU2 class for the future, where that NA will excel w/ some summer tires and decent suspension. Hang onto it! Or, swap back to stock header and put r-comps on some stock wheels for e-stock.

I have no intention of autocrossing the N/A. It is strictly daily driver. I am continuing to work on my driving and getting the V6 running better.
