Newbie with beams turbo

Hey guys, Tony from Rep of Ireland here, i do a bit of importing from japan, i have this gorgeous 1998 beams celica with hks conversion, had a bit of a problem and basically im looking for forged pistons, i was told to talk to "Celica RA45" or "Roman" as ive heard they know a great deal about beams turbo conversions etc etc, any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated....

Hi, You have come to the right place

I am currently working on a Turboed Beams also and there are 2 places which you can get pistons from.

1.) Celica_RA45 sells forged pistons, but the compression is high, and that isn't the best thing for a turboed beams.

2.) Toda builds forged pistons with a high compression, and low compression for turboed applications.

Unfortunately you will also need to replace the rods no matter which way you go. If you have the money, Toda also sells a stroker kit for the Beams Engine for both non turboed and turboed applications. Now you also might want to look at the SXE10 Altezza Beams Black Top engine parts also, although most of the parts on the blacktop will not fit the beams redtop, the block and components like the pistons and rods will. There are a few companies who sell aftermarket products for the black top to include turboed items and kits.

Would you mind telling us a little bit more about your engine and what you have done to it?

Well i imported it not 100% knowing what it had, it has hks turbo, apexi fmic, sard radiator, trd lsd, internal wise im not sure what it had but i do know it had a hks metal headgasket,so maybe the pistons and rods werent standard either way??

There has been little success with turboing the Beams Engine due to the pistons and Rods. Due to the higher compression of the NA engine, the pistons like to die on you in the 260+ RWHP range. It has also been suggested that the intake manifold does not handle boost very well at all, but i have yet to see or read this information officially.

Can i ask what your acheiving as far as horsepower? Also, what kind of exhaust manifold are you using or is it custom?

I for one, and extremely interested because i am undergoing this project as we speak and want to do it the right way, and not blow a soon to be, $10,000 dollar engine especially when i move back to the states and no parts can be found.

Beautiful car by the way, do you have any pictures of the engine?

Rogue Motorsport in the UK has tested the Red-Top intake manifold upto 2bar for their Beams turbo project. It held fine and could maybe handle a bit more.

i was just gonna say that, a guy looked at my car and said its a standard intake manifold and probably the best one for the job! i have a few pics of the engine here but arent great, im not planning on running any kind of mental boost/power, i just imported it and am planning to sell it soon

ahh.

Well, before you sell it, if you could take, maybe 15 pictures of different parts of the engine, A lot of us would be greatly appreciated. And if you don't mind, if i could use the pictures for the beams website, it would be a great addition to the page.

www.beams-redtop.com

(new website almost done)

yeah i suppose the velocity stacks in our redtop intake manifolds do stick out quite a bit....and the runners are pretty long, but thats just great for low-end torque....
now our compression ratio is real high in NA costume, but wiseco should have a piston for that....
our redtop throttle bodies are huge and i have plenty of turbo-honda boys on my case being all jealous about the diameter of our OEM throttle bodies.
the MAF should be able to handle up to 1 maybe 1.5 bar boost, injectors is a question, perhaps turbo-supra injectors? I havent found out if we run high/low resistance injectors yet (mebbe something for the website Phoenix!!!)
Eagle makes rods that we can use, i spoke with them a couple weeks back...
Headgaskets are a tough one, dunno who has multilayer steel...
turbo-manifold? Make one yourself
as to what turbo to use, im still researching this one, gonna turbo my rig as well just looking for an adequate GT30 or something close to that, perhaps a precision turbo SC61....sexy

We can use eagle rods with wiseco pistons? ? ? ? please explain some more and specifically, which ones?

I would consider dumping the TODA Stuff and going with those if it will save me 2 grand.

you gotta get your OEM pistons/rods measured and then wiseco has matching pair, Eagle i think will customize them, i'll call up and ask again....

She is nice. I love red cars with white rims

Did you ever get a chance to take some pics of your engine, namely the exhaust manifold?
