Ah thanks! I should have done a google search... I found this on wikipedia:

Toyota 3S-GE engine

I noticed your black '95 N/A on the board -- does it have the BEAMS engine? What kind of horsepower do those usually output at the wheels?

Thanks... I just read up on the toyota engines a bit. So if I decide to get an N/A MR2, what is the best year/engine to get? By best, I mean most hp/torque, and reliability. It looks like they switched to the 5S-FE later, which had less power than the 3S-GE?

The US version of the MR2 NA only came with the 5SFE - anything else (3SGE any gen, including BEAMS) will need to be sourced from importers and swapped.

the 93+ 5SFE's had 5 more hp than the 91-92's. 3s-ge's were only offered in japan and the uk.

now if your wanting power in the 5sfe engine, you won't get much. you could spend $1000 bucks on that engine and only gain 15hp

non VVTi 3S-GE was sold in Europe as well, South America too....possibly other places....

i think the Advanced Mechanism bit is the actual device that advances the timing....i suppose the VVTL-i is as well, just an educated guess bc Toyota has a totally different way of going about their valve lift as compared to Honda....

which other manufacturer does extra valve lift? you guys know? and how it works?

Mitsubishi have Mivec and Nissan have NEO VVL, I think its something like that, they all acheive something similar whilst differing slightly in method.

There's two main ways of going about it.

one is simply rolling the cam over so it opens and shuts at different times, (like VVTI)

and one is having two seperate cam profiles, which switch over at a set RPM. (like VTEC, VVTLI)

Modern systems like i-VTEC and VVTLI do both.
