Beams 3SGE Swap
I'm hoping I can get a few questions answered by the board. After some exhaustive research on this board comparing the 3stge, V6, and BEAMs swaps for my 93 NA (5sfe), I have decided that the Red Top Beams is for me.
I have found an engine and have some questions about the swap. The Swap is out of a 97 Celica and has a 5spd transmission. They state approximately 45K miles. Includes the ECU, Accessories (AC, ALT, PS), Uncut Engine Harness, and Body Harness (wires that go to the dash) that may or my not be cut. No dash cluster is included. 1. How much of a PITA if the ends are cut on the wires going to the dash? 2. Trans is a 5spd...should I use my current transmission which shifts great with no issues or use the Celica trans (maybe they are the same except linkage)? Gear ratios different? 3. Structural changes need... i.e engine mounts, exhaust? 4. Can I mate my factory exhaust to the 3SGE headers? 5. RPM and Speedo issues? 6. Any questions that I didn't ask but should have? Although I have a great job and can afford this swap, I don't won't to get crazy with unforeseen issues (and costs) during the swap. This will be a big project for me, the mechanical should be no sweat, but the harness conversion worries me. Your input and guidance would be great. Hi!
My beams came from an MR and I needed to change many things. 1. The alternator is down on the intake side in the MR, but it's top on the exhaust side in the celica. 2. You will work a lot on the wiring, because it's way different. 3. The gear-changing mechanism on the transmission points directly the opposite site on the celica and MR, you will need to rotate it 180 degrees. 4. Some other smaller problems. It can be done, we managed it too, but it will cost you many work and time. |

Yeah if you can find yourself a MR2 rear cut youd save yourself ALOT of hassles both placement and wiring mate!
But if you need anything to work out on the Celica BEAMS side Ill do my best! |

I've got a thread here somewhere, outlining the differences between celica and MR2 beams engines....
Realistically there's not a lot you *need* to change. Depends on how fussy you are. The badges on the rocker cover and intake manifold are the wrong way up for example, hahah. The celice dipstick can be awkward to get in and out, and you dont necessarily need the alternator to be on the low side. Although you could probably use your existing alternator bracket to swap it over anyway. |

Okay, it's possible that you don't have to change so many things on an engine from a Celica when you are putting it into an MR2, I just wrote down what I needed to change on the MR2 engine that came to my Celica. So if there a bigger room for the engine in the MR, you don't have to change all this
