If you're gonna build a BEAMS you need to go hardcore NA.
Build it up with a full valvetrain and rods for high revs. See if you can get it turning 9000+ rpm. Maybe even bump the compression to 12:1. Of course, this would probably require at least 93 octane at all times and maybe race gas... but it would be wicked cool =P |

i will, ive been researching building a 3sgte here but my heart is NA. I found a beams online for $1200 with the harness and ECU. I would really like to buy it but the funds just are not there yet since i just started my new job and i have to catch up after 4 months of not doing anything.
Im really considering doing something along the lines of the ultimate NA for my car phoenix and buying another mr2 shell for a HP monster. I am feeling a little confused right now on the whole subject but i think after a few weeks, ill figure out what im doing. Having a 240hp NA powered by a nemesis really appeals to me. Especially since its such a rare engine and my car phoenix is definatly one of a kind. We will see. Heres the engine, its been on yahoo for awhile now. http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r22563805 |

okay, now the question is, do i go ahead with a beams project or do i build up a 3sgte. If i get a beams, im gonna rebuild it, find as many aftermarket parts as i can, and turbo it. After owning a turbo mr2 now for 5 months, i just cant go back to NA.
Beams = $675 bucks http://page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f44430187 |

couple of questions.
this being a 3sge, can i use a turbo ECU with the beams if i turbo it? Or should i just go with an EMS Will the axles and turbo tranny bolt up to it? Anyone have any idea if ill have issues with the harness? Assuming this has 86mm pistons, will 3sgte pistons fit into this, if i bore it to 86.5 or 87.0? If my questions dont make sense, will its because i dont know much about this engine. |

If you use a turbo ECU you're not going to be taking advantage of the BEAMS system, which is essentially variable valve timing. As far as I know, this is the only advantage the BEAMS 3SGE has over the previous generation of the engine. I'm not even sure how the engine would run with a 3SGTE ECU.
I would go full EMS to take advantage of the valve timing, or else you're just paying for a pretty valve cover.

Seriously dude, dont even bother building a turbo redtop.
It's going to be worse than a built 3sgte, cost AT LEAST twice as much, and everyone will think you're a **** for spoiling a rare(ish) NA motor. |

Ive decided to not buy an engine for the next month or so and use the money i have saved up for tools that i dont have over here. I realized it would be worthless to have the engine sitting here with no tools to work on it except a screw driver. So i went out tonight and bought a really nice craftsman tool box and metric tool set. Im gonna order a few special items the beginning of next week like a craftsman torque wrench and an engine stand so i have something to put the engine on
![]() Hopefully in a month ill have enough money for what i want. Course if a deal of a lifetime comes up, ill throw the engine on a card. Right now i was looking at a 3rd gen 3sgte for 100 bucks till someone bid $500 bucks on it ( i think its fake ). so ill see if they throw the engine back up on the net here soon. |

Need a question answered pretty quickly, Does anyone know if another gen mr2 transmission will fit the beams engine? I might of found an engine, but it doesnt come with the tranny and ordering one from Toyota is out of the question. Will a 94+ 3sge or 3sgte tranny fit? will a 91-93 3sge or 3sgte. If so, are any modifications required?

Im sorry guys I disagree with the "dont turbo a beams" comment.
Ive seen a dyno of a beams in a celica (on the old celica board, not celicatech, it was on celica.net), and it made like 320 at 9 psi on a T3/T4 turbo. Its powerband was nuts. The simple fact is there just isnt enough information about it for anyone who hasnt done it or seen it done firsthand to be able to say "do it, or dont". I myself if I were Dave, because hes in Jap land, and theyre alot easier for him to find, Id go for it if I could afford it, simply for the learning experience. I talked to him at some length about this on the phone and I told him Id do it if I could. Im all for it Dave. Ill bet you could make some good numbers if you do it right. |

BEAMS engines use the S54 tranny, just like 5SFE MR2s. The Turbo tranny will bolt up with no problems, a post-93 transmission will have more mounting bolts line up.
Unfortunately, the 2ZZ 6 speed won't work, if that's what you're thinkin'. |
