Cool WFX - Bad BEAMS Build-Up

WFX - Bad BEAMS Build-Up

Thought Id start another thread with the progress of upgrading my BEAMS, complete with lots of images and videos so everyone else can share the ride with me!!

Lets kick it off with some images of my new QUAD Throttle Bodies with the Altezza Cast Alloy Inlet Manifold and TRD Ram Tubes to boot!

These babies will enable me to get rid of my annoying AFM and coupled with the MOTEC M400 and a few other nasty goodies it should prove an even more fun motor to drive!

Naturally I cant wait to get it all done!

Special thanks to Glenn (Celica_RA45) for these too!

Thanks guys I do plan to upgrade alot of the internal bits as well but it all comes down to money and time, naturally!

ITB Test Fit

Finally set aside a day to pull the intake manifold off again only this time I took it a little further and removed the standard inlet mount. I noticed there was alot of plugs down the back there most seem to be earth related thou.

After removing this piece I could clearly see there was going to be plenty of room to mount the quads in there and still have room before it hits the firewall. As you will see in the images below one of the quads sits fairly close to the canister, if I can find a way to mount this else where I think I might as it will free up space around this quad to allow better flow of air.

A new shiny fuel rail would look nice with the qauds! Anyone know if we can use the Altezza ones for our motors?

The below image shows where the new TPS is now sitting and where the brake booster vacumm line will run. A tight fit but nothing my small arms cant handle!

Not that much room to have a intake box around the quads so what I would like to do instead is design a custom box that mounts to the motor roughly above the quads and place a panel filter in the top of the box. Then bolt a hood scoop to this box and have it protruding through the hood like a muscle car shaker scoop! This should provide a nice amount of air for the quads as well as keep everything filtered.

Still drawing up some designs at this stage but something like that would be ideal for my application. If anyone has any other ideas by all means let us know, thanks!

air box

you need some surf board foam to shape 1 up and the air box would bolt onto the quads ,similar to mine and then bolt ram tubes to the back ing plate and away you go ps my box sits about 15 mm away from my master cyl as well

If I'm bolting the tubes inside the box how much space do I need around the tubes to let enough air in?

The air enters from the sides with ram tubes correct so in theory would just need to watch the space between top rim of tube and box yea?

air box

you need to make it about 70mm past the ram tube at either end ,no 1 and no 4 and get it as close as you can to the fire wall with out touching it and getting the lid to go over the ram tubes as well is the tricky bit

OK lets get this ball rolling.... went MIA for awhile there but its all good now!

Finally located a tuner in my area to setup the MOTEC M400 and get everything running sweet before more internal upgrades. On December 10th the machine goes in for its tune however before then I need to get it all ready.

This includes bolting the quads in place, fitting my new hiclone air filter and installing my new hood scoop above the quads to provide some fresh air. I have a track day this weekend to attend and then after that I'll start pulling it to bits and getting it ready.

Bolting the quads on Ive already sussed out so that should be fairly easy and Ive also got to attach the brake booster line. I still need to work out the best method of running my throttle cable as it needs to come from up underneith. If I can sort out some sort of mounting plate to hold it in position I should be right. The other breather line to the head anyone know if this needs to be connected or not? Other then that there shouldn't be anything quad related aside from re-routing the TPS plug for the MOTEC loom.

This is my ITG Hiclone Saussage Air Filter for the quads. Just need to cut 4 holes out of the plate and position it accordingly and everything should be sweet. Ive read you need to oil this filter first before use, anyone know the facts on these things?

Leave it at that for now till I start pulling it apart and then Ill get some more pics up, cheers!

AFARCC Collie Track Day

Well the Collie Track Day has come and gone and what a awesome time I had spreading my wings for the first time! We only had a small group of people turned up for the day which was good on one side as it meant we got as many turns as we liked. 11 cars in total with track time every 5 mintues, $70 for the day plus usual wear and tear, you cant go wrong with that = priceless!

My new suspension held up very nicely and gave me the ability to really throw the car round those sharp bends keeping traction the whole time. Brakes on the other hand I need to look at closely before the next one as brake fade didn't take very long to settle in. Would need to look at upgrading to higher temp brake fluid, better brake pads and possibly even upgrade my brake lines to stainless steal. These upgrades alone should allow me to stay out on the track longer then 3 or 4 laps which I soooo wanted to do it but having next to no brakes just isnt cool!

The sheer number of laps we were allowed turned out to be quite hard on the cars in terms of cooling. By the afternoon when the sun was at its highest temp (35 that day) cars suffered left right and centre including my own ride which after coming into the pits after the 38th lap of the day litterally blew its top! Spewin forth coolant and water everywhere and making lots of steam! I let the car cool down and topped it back carefully and got it all running again for the drive home. Almost home and I hear a odd carby like noise coming from the front end... hmmmm that doesnt sound right! Got it home and chcked it out after it cooled down and... BUGGAR! Ive cracked the exhaust manifold!! A very nice fine crack along one of the back pipe join lines so had to pull that out and get it re-welded!

Over all had a blast, learnt alot about how to handle the car at high speeds and will definately cant wait to be back doing it all again! Ive posted up a few photos taken by HighOctanePhotos.com and I have lots of good video footage Im putting together now which I will upload shortly.

wow thats bad news about the manifold bud. You've got me worried now
Although I don't think mine will ever come under that kinda stress, well as far as a track day in 35 degree ambient. You'd be lucky to see over 25 in scotland lol.
i have mine heat wrapped and silicone coated if that makes any difference.

Oh and the link to the vid - fix it quick, it's killing me

I guess thats why they call it a Test & Tune Track Day!

Definately have to look at some sort of extra protection for the manifold maybe chrome them?? Or heat wrap?? We'll see!

Ok just a couple of pics from the weekend:

Hood Scoop Install

Quad Throttle Body Setup

Throttle linkage setup isnt as slick as Glenn's setup but works nonetheless, will look at something better like his later. Just a few little bits left to do and its off to get the MOTEC installed.

Cool

InTune Performance

OK so last week the car went in for some major heart surgery at InTune Performance. Aaron installed the MOTEC M400 along with a race spec muffler system and tuned it all together with the Quad Throttle Bodies I recently installed. The highest power made was 174.1HP (129.83KW) @ 8600RPM however as that is a little high for the stock internals I got him to set the rev limiter to only 8000RPM so I would dare say a drop in power to about 170 odd horsepower at the wheels. When the upgraded internals come next year we'll look at upping that. The race spec muffler he installed really is "Race Spec" definately sounds the part but a little too loud for street driving so after Motorvation will have to install the quieter system so I can enjoy it on the street.

Need to get my Tacho and Speedometer working as that was hooked up. Tacho should be easy enough as the MOTEC has a tacho wire to run to but speedo not quite sure if this needs to go to MOTEC or gearbox if someone knows already would love the heads up! I'm running a MOTEC temp sensor but need to chase down a single wire temp sensor that I can install to my stock temp guage on the cluster otherwise looks like some guages are on order next so I can keep a eye on whats going on. Ive got the MOTEC software too should I wish to connect via laptop and view what the MOTEC is doing.

'kin ell wayno - it sounds like it's tearing a hole in the atmosphere!!

thought it would have made a bit more the 174whp though
I'm hoping to make 170 once I have the intake sorted and get it mapped for the exhaust, and thats not much to ask for considering i'm making
163@7700rpm already - no ITB's here.

so, whats the power delivery like - did it loose much in the low rpm's?

however keep up the good work
