Accelerator / throttle cable tightening

...next question following my seats.

I noticed the other day that I have about 3/4" slack on my throttle cable. I looked through my 1991 workshop manual a few times but it doesn't say how to tighten this?

I've felt that my throttle response has been a bit lacking for about a month now so I think this has got to be the cause.

Any pointers how to adjust please? Is it done at the pedal (and how do I get to that part -only had a quick feel today but didn't find much) or can I do it at the throttle body -most of the on-line BGB's just show drawings and not "what does what".

Thanks guys,

Richard

Thanks NewForm, I never realise that adjuster would take up thst much slack. I'll try it tomorrow.

...yea I guessed that might be the case. I'm just a bit worried at the moment as it's almost slack enough to come off the plastic guide completely if I come right-off the throttle. Don't want that happening while I'm driving.

If it stops raining (ha -fat chance) I'll try it tomorrow morning outside my place before I get back in to the workshop.

Just taken up the slack as much as I can using the adjuster at the end of the cable -I think something's slipped elsewhere, I'm sure I've still got 1/4" of slack cable. Something to look at during the week I think.

Cheers,

Richard

I'm not sure, but might be worth a shot to look. Is there an adjustment at the other end of the cable too?

I'll not worry about that for now...I might have a bigger problem.

Just before I left the workshop I dumped a one gal "emergency" canister of fuel in my tank -been carring it for a few weeks and I've no real need for one so decided to just use it.

...now there's a slight mis-fire out of gear, above 2,000rpm (it's OK on idle) and it won't drive at all in gear above 2,000rpm -just mis-fires like hell and nearly grounds to a halt. I tried running the car up and down -off the main road but it wasn't clearing. The engine was warmed up by the time I started doing that.

I know the fuel was OK because I filled the canister at the same time I put a full tank in. I'd have thought petrol lasted OK for 6-8 weeks?

So, the only thing I ve done today is a) tightened my throttle cable and b) put 5L of unleaded fuel into a tank which was about 1/3 full initially.

I've left it at the workshop and just changed cars for the moment -too dark to start mucking around.

I'll try to see if there are any ECU error codes in the morning then try an ECU re-set if that's OK. Otherwise it sounds like this fuel I've chucked in is suspicious. The cars driven fine right up to the point I went to drive home so It must be something I've done today. Typical, I'll probably have to cancel the MOT tomorrow morning unless it's something very simple to fix.

Anyone ever had the same thing happen? I'll have a look through the rest of the forum -I recall seeing another thread similar to this now.

BTW: I've had this mis-fire problem ever since I got the engine. Never been a problem before but it's only been seldom and momentary before at about 2,500rpm and only with a cold engine. I've not worked out what it is yet. This is the first day the engine just wouldn't go.

Na, I don't think so as the fuel filter's not ben fitted that long. A few of us had a look again first thing this morning and it looks like it's dodgy fuel. Going to try and get it on the ramps this evening and drain the tank. That'll at least get me back to where I started yesterday morning. Then we can see if anything else has gone. I've had to cancel my MOT for now.

...Looks like it's fixed now. Drined the tank (lucky mine's a rev 2 so I've got a tank drain plug) and filled with fresh fuel and after a bit of "clearing" it seems to be back to normal now.

...well getting back to normal. I've a fresh tank of good fuel + a half bottle of fuel cleaner in there now. I've got a horrible dead band still between 2 and 3,000rpm but I'm hoping if I drive it all week it might clear -seems to be getting better. At least it can be driven now although junctions and roundabouts are a bit of an experience at the moment.
