Oils aint Oils
Nearing the end of my longggggg project.
What l have is a brand new BEAMS Red Top. Question is which oil to use. Since its new it will start with 0 -30 W run in for 1000 kms then changed. Thinking using mineral and sticking to Castrol. Inputs would be much appreciated |

Good point to note about starting off with standard oil for break in. I know that using synthetic right off the bat isn't very good.

when i bought my engine I started with basic mineral oil (even if the engine had 10 000km), used it for the first 1000km then change it (to the exact same thing) and did 5000km on this oil change
after I switched to Motul 300V high quality oil (not mineral, 100% synthetic BUT this oil is not made from petroleum)... 20$/liter |

On my fresh rebuild i used: (3S-GTE)
Castrol 10w-30 for 100 miles Castrol 10w-30 for 1000 miles Castrol 10w-30 for 3000 miles (still on this oil change) Mobil 1 10w-30 from here on out every 3000 miles. I have 200psi of compression in each cylinder when I put it away for the winter awaiting a bigger turbo!!! |

From what I heard is that you don't ever use a synthetic right after a rebuild. It'll coat the cylinders and not allow the rings to seat properly. Maybe someone else might confirm if this is just a rumor or fact.

That's what I've always heard. Never use synthetic oil during the motor break-in period, as your motor won't break in properly if you run synthetic oil during the break-in period.

I have heard that go both ways. I have heard people say get into it, and drive it like you plan on driving it. I have heard other people say take it real easy for the first 5k miles or so.
I'd assume drive it normal, but never get into it, but don't just put put around either. So medium driving I guess you could call it lol. |

5K RPM run in is fine. jsut make sure you keep the rev's varying. don't sit it constant revs for too long
