BEAMS Brakes for Celica
Hows it going guys. I am looking for decent discs and pads for the Celica. Its been upgraded to the BEAMS brakes already.
Apparently the discs are different sze to the normal 2.0 Celica discs. They BEAMS discs are 270mm and the normal 2.0 discs are 275mm. I dont know id the 275mm ones will fit. Ether way I will be needing a decent set of discs and pads. I used to have the Black Diamond drilled and grooved wth no probs when it had the old engine and brakes. I will budget around £200 for discs and pads. Any suggestions. Thanks Waz |

I'd go Carbotech pads mate -got a much better rep. than any of the others. They do cost a wee bit more though but they're awesome on the MR2 with stock discs.
I got road / track ones (Panther Plus, not the XP8 track / race spec) from Rogue. ...not sure where you get them for a Celica though. Rogue Systems - Panther Plus High Performance Brake Pads (Front) (Carbotech) Rogue Systems - Panther Plus High Performance Brake Pads (Rear) (Carbotech) |

I am reliably informed on the MR2 that std ventillated discs and carbotech pads is just about the best set-up.
IMO your EBC / Diamond Black types are brakes you see in "Max Power" / "Fast Car" mags -rather than the one's I've seen on actual track cars (MR2's anyway). With std ventillated discs you've no worries like you might with grooved / dimpled or drilled discs which tend have more of a reputation to crack or shatter under heat. ...but this question is akin to asking what's the best tyres -10 folk will give 10 options each stating they're the best option (bit like opening a can of worms). No doubt there'll be a few recommendations on here. For me, these days I know there's one supplier I know gives me good sound impartial advice -so I go with that and pass on the info. That's why I'd suggest looking at the Carbotech's first -but I don't know what the range will be like for Celicas (should be able to get them I'd have thought -but it's near enough £200 for the full set of pads only). |

I did think they were the same but wasn't sure. The pads I have are the same for N/A's I think.
They're going to wear faster because they're uprated. Some squealing but, how can I describe -sounds more like the brakes you'd hear on say a BTCC car than an annoying squeal. Dust is terrible (I've heard EBC red stuff is just as bad) , but like I say -they are increadibly good at stopping. Just make sure your calipers and discs are in good nick -I've got 4 new calipers and brackets to fit with Goodbridge braided hoses as the car feels twitchy now under heavy braking with old calipers (no more refurbs -new one's required). |

I just got refurb kit in for the front calipers (cant afford new ones) as for discs, I am still in a debate.
I have also been looking for braided hoses but nowhere to be found for my car. Last edited by waz; 03-04-2008 at 02:18 PM.. Reason: Spelling |

Hey dudes!, i'd agree with RST on this, plane discs are what i use and many track day regulars use unless there paying LOADS for high quality grooved discs, i dont see many if any using drilled discs. I posted a pic on ccuk about the front discs, looks to tight for 275mm discs in my opinion.
The ebc stuff does have a rep of being a big max power, but i think that mainly comes from there older stuff, the red stuffs material changed a year or two ago and i've never heard anything bad about them from many track guys, there cheap and from my experience work very very well, PAIN is the only word i can use to describe the braking capability of my car currently despite the back brakes barely working. Brake dust is not admirable though but no matter what you get really your going to have to keep on top of the dust. In saying all that i'm going to change to carbotech for my next set, just simply because there getting a great rep, particularly amongst track goer's, and i'm always up for trying something different. As for your back brakes waz i wouldnt get to worried about that, you basically need something thats going to keep your back wheels straight, and not outbrake the front, unless your into trailbraking your brake balance isnt as important as in an mr2, oem pads in the rear will probably be just fine. I'm curious now does anyone know what size discs the 92 on mr2 turbo has up front? the beams celica has the same two pot calipers. |

Edophus, ordered the standard discs from the details you gave me. The guy said 2 weeks and now its moved to a month. Not happy as got all the parts sitting waiting for the car.
Got carbotech panther pads and caliper rebuild kit for the front and Magnex pads for the rear with caliper rebuild kit, will also be buying brake shoes for the rear as my handbrake is messed up. No luck with braided hoses. Ah well. |

You just have to wait for suppliers mucking you around these days (most of them seem to do it). A week can too easily turn into a month without that ever promised call back. I've got outstanding orders for my car and running out of suppliers now who won't rob me blind or just tell be bare faced lies (who are you waiting on the order from).
...Have a look on 'tinternet or imoc.co.uk for front brake disc sizes for the MR2. And BTW, tubby SW20's came with twin pot callipers up front -exactly the same ones as the N/A's came with (exactly same discs as well), least '92 (rev 2) onwards did. ...Waz, personally I'd loose the 18's and half the ICE TBH. Otherwise, are uprated brakes worth it? You're lugging round a fair bit of weight in mods (so maybe you need them I guess to stop ), and 18's will be pretty laggy on acceleration which will hamper the BEAMS.
