FYI I wasn't actually complaining lads, Just thought to make a joke with smilies

Anyhow, If I was interested I would run the convo through a translator.

But yeah, it's actually cool that lots of europeans know several languages pretty well in general... unlike the UK/Irish crowd (in gerneral mind you!)

ROFL you guys take it too seriously!! hahaha!
The way these dudes translate their dutch to eng is kinda funny to me, loses alot in translation.
I grew up having to be fluent in 4 languages at least because of all the different folks coming to our shores. It's such an alien notion to me not being able to do more than one language....completely irrational I realize now of course.

Bringing this thread back from the dead since I don't wish to start a new one and this one has gone off on another tangent.

I have been thinking about how to smooth over the swap I plan on doing soon regarding the transmission. Is the LSD differential in the FWD Celica beams tranny able to be transplanted into the S54 of my 91 5SFE and can the old tranny be bolted up to the beams. Shouldn't this allow me to keep my axles and eliminate the transmission case drilling needed to be done which is an extra cost I don't need?

Seconded question. It was mentioned that the gear ratios where easily changed in the beams transmission earlier in this thread. Can the same be done to my old S54? It's not good on the engine or my MPG to be cruising 80 MPH down the freeway at 4000 rpm for an extended length of time.

1st Q:
I *think* all S54's were created equal (bolt patterns & mounts, speed sensor mounting mech-or-electro, shifter linkage location...), except for maybe the gear ratios between USDM, EUDM & JDM being slightly different (reference another Toyota-geek about this one, I'm no good for this, JDM one probably has shorter gear ratios than the USDM, not sure). From the outside I the S54 on the BEAMS looks newer/upgraded/strengthened/different than the 1992 S54 that my 5SFE came with. I went from ST184 5SFE to BEAMS engine from an ST202. I am assuming your comment about keeping your *old* S54 is because it is sitting in an MR2? What screwy hell on earth is this case drilling you are talking about?? Have I been deprived of some serious fitment headache??

2nd Q:
I am pretty sure you can stuff new gear ratios into the old S54, given they come from another S54. I have read this in passing about some dudes refreshing their old S54 because of busted synchro's and/or gears, by stuffing other S54 gears in there from a junkyard....in fact I think it was some dude with a turbo-Camry putting the gears from an oldish Celica S54 in there....I even think they were different ratios, I'm trying to remember....again Toyota-tranny-geek would be good here too

Just what I have read in this forum about modifying the FWD tranny for the mid-engine placement if you plan on swapping a Celica Beams into an MR2. Was really the only post that actually went into detail about the modification. Everything else is kinda vague on what has to be done, ie. "the tranny will have to be modified for mid-engine placement...", and that's it.

Doesn't the MR2 with the 5SFE engine come with the S54 transmission as well? I think the mod is for the linkage no?

In fact I just checked it and it does indeed come with the 5SFE/S54 engine/tranny.....I would assume it's not that complex....I am pretty sure it's just the linkage....

COME ON MR2 GUYS CHIME IN ALREADY!!

The celica (or Caldina) beams motor can most certainly be swapped into a mk2. How do I know? My Beams motor and transmission came from a Celica. I've put about 12k on it so far.

The thermostat housing for the celica is different, but useable in the mr2. The pipe is a few inches longer. The water outlet housing is about the only thing that needs to be special ordered. You could even find ways around this.

you don't need to change the ALT.... I'd do the opposite, I would change the Mr2 original mounting position to move it on the top... easier to work on

A/C compressor don't need to be replaced... they need to be removed.... get those crappy things out of the car... they have no use lol

you can use the celica water outlet, you will only need to modify your normal water lines and add a filler neck in the engine lid (that's what I did, works perfectly for the last 2 years)

tranny really need to be changed but you can use the normal s54 (5sfe tranny) and the normal e153 or e153 lsd both from the 3sgte engines and they work perfectly (I tried both ones)

Send a message via MSN to Protok
A quick question while the thread is still around.
Is it possible to take the LSD from the auto gearbox and stick it into the Manual Gearbox?

Kermitpower; can you not go to Toyota dealer and ask them to give you a quote for the LSD?
They can only give you a price for it on an invoice with its part number in an MR2. Surely that would shut them up especially with the Toyota letter head?

Kermitpower; WELL Idont know buddy.
There was a brochure for sale about a year ago on MR2 TRADER. Was around $60 . You may want to post there and see if you can bribe the guy who bought it off him.
Get in touch with Japan. But you need some one who speaks fluent.
Have a hard copy of the manual, which so far im the only one that has it, but sorry not for sale at any price. Went through so much shiiit to get it. Anyway its an archieve so l doubt there are any other copies.
Lastely unfortunately dont race and enjoy her.
