Aftermarket gear ratios - s54

Does anyone know if you can get aftermarket gear sets for the S54 gear box? The ones that they have from factory don't seem too desirable for racing, and it would be nice to know if there are options out there.

Let me know.

the ones from the factory are pretty much good only for racing. only reason to change them out is if you have a LOT of power, or just want better fuel economy.

Really? From what I've seen / heard the gear ratio's don't seem that close and the gap fom 1st to second is quite large. The most attractive one seems to be 3-4th. It would be nice to have a closer 2-3 gear change and a slightly lower diff ratio.

1st gear = 3.285

2nd gear = 1.960

3rd gear = 1.322

4th gear = 1.028

5th speed = 0.820

Retreat = 3.153

Deceleration ratio = 4.176

I felt that the car could definitely benefit from a different final drive ratio, and some closer ratio gears...

In saying this, if I could have revved the engine to 8000rpm, it would be falling back down into a more appropriate RPM, and changing the final drive to suit probably would have been good enough. I suppose I was just about topping out 4th gear on the fastest part of taupo track, which is what you want i guess. I'd spend the $$$ on an ECU to raise the rev limit, before spending $$$$$$$$$ on different gear ratios.

Easiest way to 'effectively' change your final drive ratio, put some really low profile tires on some 14s or something.

Do any of you know of a longer 5th gear that fits the S54 box?

Yeah man that is the plan, find a good ecu to tune it with and go from there. But the ratios thing would be further in the development.

OlberJ: Why do you want a taller 5th for the s54? Lower revs at highway speeds or a higher top speed? You could sort that with a higher diff ratio... The car would probably hit an aerodynamic barrier before getting near the end of 5th though.

If the s54 gearing were any shorter it would never ever get to go on the big kid rides at the amusement park. You guys might want to check out the tranny threads in the V6 forum as there is a lot of information there.

The taller S53 and S51 gearing also fit into an S54.

EDIT: You might want to check out the graphs in this thread. They'll be a bit off for a Beams because the redline is different but you can get an idea of what the different transmissions offer for gear ratios. I think I've got all the transmissions that can either be turned into a hybrid or bolts on in there.

We're running the S54 with our 3VZ's and what we're finding is 1-4 is perfect for hard as nails acceleration but we need a longer 5th for motorway cruising
and a better top speed.

We thought we'd found the correct 5th in the 2SFE Camry box but that's only on rare versions of that Camry, or it's rare over here at least.

What we would like is a 0.73 5th gear. Any ideas where we'd fins that fairly easily to go in the S54 box?

What S51 is that though, as there's a few different ones it appears.

S51 from the SV20 2.0 Camry has a .82, same as the Mk2 N/A.
S51 from the SV25 4WD Camry is .73.

If all your S51 boxes over there come with .73 5th gears are they readily available?

Where did you get the data for the .73 S51 5TH ratio?

It's something we're looking at in depth here and have found the .73 seems to only be available on the ST162 Celica box with the Superstrut suspension or the 4WD Camry. Both rare as rocking horse poop.

TWOBRUTAL MR2

If you could get me a part number for the S51 5th gear you got there, that'd be sweet.

Cheers,

This is where I got the info. Toyota S transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'll do a little digging and see what I can find for a part number and to confirm/disprove the gear ratios.

Not sure whether this helps, but I have found this whilst trawling for my own info on close ratio gear boxes:

KAAZ Close Ratio Gear Kit for MR2 and Celica | Product News | Co-ordSport: Wholesale distributors of peformance car parts, including: RAYS Wheels, KAAZ LSDs, ARP fasteners, Cusco and many more

I have an ex works Toyota Carina/Corona race car that was originally built for a New Zealand race series. It has the 3SGE n/a aspirated engine but the gear synchros are wrecked in the 'box that was fitted. I have fitted a standard Carina GTi Gearbox for now but would prefer a close ratio set up. I'm not sure yet whether the gear ratio set, above, will work for me or not. I am assuming that the 'box in my car is an S54????

Not been back on here for a while, very sorry.

The car was a works car built in NZ for the "Schedule S" series in about 1993/4. It was raced by Julian Bailey & sponsored by Castrol

The build was supervised by DAve Cook from the UK who was formerley the works Vauxhall Cavalier builder in the BTCC & prior to that built Group 1 Ford Capris. He built several cars for Toyota for NZ & S Africa. The shell is to Touring Car standards but the mechanicals are "Group N+" or "Super Production".

AP Brakes, 15 in wheels, Proflex dampers, 1000Kg, engine not that highly tuned in the spec I have it in (about 200 Bhp) on ITBs & Motec management.

I have it from the former team ownerthat it cost £93,000 to build in 1993!!!!!!

There's a small story & phot of the car here:
http://www.classicsportscarclub.co.u...mans_Smith.pdf

(Right hand side, top of the page - white car - headlin "Toyota Tourer back on track").

The car was imported in to the UK in the late 1990s & used in the UK's National Saloon Car Cup & then club racing.

Competition Gearbox to replace S54

Would anyone be interested in a possioble Group Buy of a proper competition gearbox to replace the S54.

No one seems to do a gear kit or a close ratio replacement gearbox sufficiently close enough for my race purposes (a spread of ratio from 2.5 to 1) so I have been thinking about tryoing to get an H Pattern SADEV box (similar to the ones used in the Reanault Clio & Pug 106 race & rally cars) adapted to fit my Carina FWD application. The bell housing would need adapting but I'm told its possible! It must be possible to similarly adapt such a set up for the MR2.

Just to mention guys, I had my 5th gear lengthened by buying a longer gear and synchro. Cost me around £150, great for cruising with a ratio of 0.73:1 instead of 0.82:1.

Part Numbers: 33428-32040 & 33336-33020

That would be amazing. Too bad there aren't many people in the US that race MkII's and even fewer with Beams engines.

Did the longer gear make much of a difference in your fuel efficiency?

Well before 56mph was at 2900rpm and it is now at 2600rpm, dropping the rpms obviously makes a difference to the economy and also less droney when driving at higher speeds for a while.

Is it possible to get the 5th gear ratio down to .6 or .65? I saw that you went from .83 to .73 and dropped highway RPMs a little bit - is it possible to go taller than .731?
